Is it legal to start your own cardroom?

Let’s say you wanted to start a poker club or something in the United States. Would it be legal for players to sign up for a tournament where the buy-in was some number of dollars (less than $100) assuming all players were 21 or older.

It would be illegal. You’d need to get a licence before you started to provide any gambling service. Use the source link below to find the Gaming Control Board for your state and see what you’d need to do to get a licence but you wouldn’t be guaranted to get it.

This is not dependant on the United States law as gambling laws are decided by individual states. In California it would be legal and in many other states you can find ways to work around the law by starting a private clubs (like Freemasons or another fraternal organization)
