Throwing a benefit for my mom. how do we get donations?

Posted by admin

My 45 year old mother recently had her leg amputated due to cancer and the bills are beginning to pile up so we are throwing a benefit party. We have a venue and date but now what? How do I get people to donate items for the raffle? What are some other ideas for raising money? I was thinking poker tournament, and winner splits the pot?
Also, if your in South Florida, wanna help?

The best way to get donations is to pick up the phone and call local businesses in your area. Be sure to mention that your mom is a resident of the area. Churches are great for coming out to support people in need in a certain area. Call or stop in to churches in your area with flyers that can be posted on the church bulletin board. Put posters up all over town in the businesses too. Call your local paper and see if the editor will do a story on the family’s plight and mention the upcoming benefit. Just hit the streets and pick up the phone and be creative and you’ll have a successful benefit!

Call your local radio stations and see if they will put something on the radio about it… I hear a lot of this kind of things here in Va. Ask local businesses for donations of their product and raffle it off for $1/ticket or maybe $5/ticket if its a great item.

Go to businesses… salons, grocery stores, etc… ask them for a donation as in an item or gift certificate to be auctioned off. It will be a right off for the businesses plus a plug for the business. You set up the items and you can do a silent auction or have someone do the bid starting. It works very well and for a good cause people rarely turn you down. You should also have food, appetizers would be nice and beverages. You will need to spend a little money but you will benefit.

How about an organized Biker/poker run. They are very common and usually have a good turn out. Not sure how to organize one though, as i’ve never had to do that.

    Best of luck!
