Online poker Donkey?

Posted by admin

ok, i’m in an online cash game with blinds $5-$10. I have $300 and i’m in the big blind holding 8, 4. The button player only has $60 left and he goes all in. I call because it only cost me $50 more and plus i’ve been hitting cards all night.
He flips over k,k and i turn over 8,4 offsuit. flop comes out ace, 8, 4 and the turn and river was a blank. I end up winning the pot and this guy is pissed!
He couldn’t believe i called on 8,4 and starts calling me a donkey. What the heck is a donkey and why do people think we care if they called us donkies? Does that make someone feel better by calling another person a donkey at the poker table?
He said i shouldn’t be calling with 8,4. Are there rules against me playing weak hole cards?

It’s very frustrating when you have a strong hand and somebody beats you with garbage. Calling other players donkies is just venting because they’ve been busted. A donkey is simply a weak player who doesn’t understand the game and makes bad decisions. It’s a poker specific synonym for idiot. I see it all the time playing online, where somebody really WILL make a dumba$$ call, hit cards, and then the other player will start berating him. The people calling others donkies are actually pretty foolish themselves. Take your example. You called and won from a heavily dominated position. In that situation I would have PRAISED your play, and reinforced the idea that you played the hand well. That makes you more likely to do it in the future, and the majority of the time you’re going to lose. Instead he’s got you thinking about it, which is the last thing he should be wanting.

Talking crap when you get beat is just a way to convince yourself that you didn’t get outplayed, you just got unlucky. And in this case it’s true. But I’ve been called a donkey for playing hands where I had a flush and straight draw, top two pair, and even calling an all in bet from a maniac with AQ! In your position I wouldn’t have risked 17% of my stack with an 84. But that’s me, Gus Hansen routinely plays worse starting cards. Especially in cash games. It’s all about your style. At the end of the day if you’re consistently turning a profit then you’re not a donkey. Let the sound and the fury wash over you, they’re just letting off steam.

    Edit-
I don’t think you have to be an underdog to be a donkey, you just have to make consistently bad plays. Over betting the pot when you hold an extremely strong hand is a very good example of this. If you raised pre-flop with pocket aces and two aces hit on the flop will you just shove all in? If you do then there’s a good chance you’re a donkey.

My pocket aces got cracked by Q,2 when I raised to $50 before the flop and he was the only caller. That guy was a donkey with my $400. A donkey is a person who makes bad plays while being an underdog.

I love it when they call me a donkey because that means I have their money.

Another name for a Donkey is an A s s – check it in the dictionary.

So when a player calls you a donkey it really means they are calling you an a s s.

Basically, they are trying to distract people from their horrible bluff and pretend that they actually knew what they were doing.

Usually, what I say when somebody starts talking about donkeys is: Sorry, from now on, we PROMISE to always fold to any raise you make.

One that happened to me last night:
    My hand: 33
    Flop: 10 6 5, 2 clubs
UTG goes all in, I call, he flips over 9c 7c, and he catches a 9 on the river. He calls ME the donkey because I called his 9 high hand.
