Online Poker Tournaments – Learn How to Win Now!

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008
If you have been playing online poker for a while now, but only doing it casually or during freetime when you are stuck for something to do, it may be time for you to move on to the next level and join online poker tournaments, so that you can take something you enjoy doing, and win a lot of money at the same time. But before you can get to the part about winning a lot of money, you first need to learn how to win at online poker tournaments. Here are some few tips and strategies:

First thing you have to adjust in terms of strategy is with the speed in which you collect chips. In casual games, you only need to accumulate the maximum amount of chips, but in online poker tournaments, you need to be able to collect the most chips under a certain time limit, and with constantly increasing blinds. This means you must be more willing to risk things by playing more hands, which is the fastest way for you to win a lot of chips.

Next, while in standard games, a dollar has a constant value, online poker tournaments use virtual chips, which have a relative value. Starting out with a thousand dollars worth of chips makes them more valuable than the next thousand dollar’s worth of chips you win. The fact that you can’t buy your way back into the tournament places a lot of value in your last few chips.

You also need to learn the Gap Concept that was introduced by David Sklansky. The Gap Concept means that you need a really good hand to play against whoever opened the betting. This hand should be better than what you need to open with yourself. Basically speaking, if you are calling a bet, you need a very strong hand, but if you are only making the bet, you can cruise by on a semi-strong hand. The gap concept should be kept in mind when you are stealing blinds or making moves.

Play according to the blinds. Blinds that are low will allow you to play a more laid back game, as you sit back and wait for your opportunity to take advantage of other players’ mistakes, but when the blinds are starting to rise, you need to have the guts to risk a lot and start gambling.

Focus is very important in online poker tournaments, where there is a tendency to be distracted by other tables and future opponents. What happens in other tables is always secondary to what is happening in your own table. Worry about your current opponents and only pay attention to the other tables when you have already become the chip leader on your current table.

Last but not the least, luck is still a major factor. You need to keep this in mind when choosing which online poker tournaments to join. As all players will have contradicting lucks, your chances of being lucky decrease the more players there are. So if there’s a 200-man tournament and a 90-man tournament going on, try to join the 90 man tournament first.

Poker-Tipping the Dealer?

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

I’ve played a bit of online poker and plenty of home games, but never anything with a professional dealer. I know that they are in the service industry and rely on tips from the players. I also found online an article about tipping for tournaments. However I’m going to an indian casino in a bit and plan on playing some low stakes cash games. What are the general rules for tipping the dealer in these situations?

is anyone interested in online poker coaching?

Monday, December 8th, 2008

ok, well I was thinking about starting to get into online poker coaching. Thus far I have only taught classes to my friends, and they have improved greatly. I looked online and found some sites but they cost around 150-250 an hour. This seems like to me it would limit them to high stakes players.

I would like to teach some smaller stakes players, or any players really that are interested. I plan on starting out charging only 25 dollars an hour.

My online full tilt name is DaSarge06 . If you look it up you can see I have over 17k winnings in the past 120 days. I normally teach MTT strategy and Cash Strat, but have taught Sit’n'Go before.

If anyone is interested post here, or email me and we can get in touch. For now, Good luck at the tables!
well, for pokercoach, I understand that I haven’t played many SnG’s. If you notice in the post I teach MTT strategy. Also I would note that I have played a decent amount of MTT’s, and know a good deal about general strategy. For more volume of SnG’s refer to Shipit05 on pokerstars. As for you saying I play 2-5 dollar buyins, I don’t quite undersrtand as I have played many 100 or higher MTT’s. Please post what you mean when you say the lower limits. TY TY good luck at the tables!
lol at nun Y. haha, 120 days = 4 months. And anyways you can check on OPR.

I play poker online – need some advice?

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Recently I’ve been playing online poker and making some decent money.

But I realized it’s having side-effects on me. I put in 20-30 hours a week and make like ~$2000. But it’s really nerve racking to play. I’m holding my breath when my moneys on the line, basically the whole time. My eyes are focused the entire time because I play many tables and never really have a second to rest. It’s decision after decision so I don’t have time to rest my eyes. Also I get the ultimate highs and lows after playing. After a few months of this, it’s starting to really change who I am even when I don’t play poker.

What do yall think?

PROS: I can make $100,000+ a year and eventually more.
CONS: ITS RUINING MY LIFE

Is there any way to relax…….. my brain gets so stimulated after I just have to do 10 things at once or I get bored.

Can anyone pay for my buy in to the 2009 World Series of Poker?

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

I would do anything to play in that tournament and if I won some money would be willing to make some sort of deal so we would both be happy

Doing an Online Poker Experiment… Anyone Want to Participate?

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Trying to conduct an experiment about mood and luck, if you play online poker and want to participate here is what you can do:

The next time you play record the following:

1. The mood you are in on a scale of 0-10, with 0 being extremely depressed and 10 being very joyous.

2. A self-rating at the type of luck you usually have in life (0-10) with ten being extremely lucky.

3. A list of all dealt cards. For example if I was dealt a Three of Hearts and Ace of Spades I would write down 3hAs. Please record as many dealt hands as possible.

- also if your mood shifts feel free to record that. A sample response may look like this

Mood: 7
Luck: 5

8h9s
4sKh
Qs7d
5c4c
Mood:5
7d9h
AdKd
etc.

also if anyone knows a site that assigns numerical values to different dealt hands based on strength that would be helpful in calculating the results. Thanks, hope to hear from you.

Free Online Poker – the Best Choice for Novices

Monday, December 1st, 2008
There are many types of poker that can be played. Even though Texas Hold’Em is one of the most recent types of poker, it enjoys the highest popularity of all poker games. Perhaps the reason for this is because the rules are quite simple and you can learn the basics in a few games. Texas Hold’Em is a type of flop game that combines elements of both stud and draw poker, but even though it is the easiest to learn it is also the most challenging. The goal of the player is, as in most games, to win the whole amount of bets that players placed in the course of the hand, also known as the pot. The winner is the player who has lasted until the final round and continues to win the last pot, all the money bet in the course of the whole game.

The combinations of cards in poker vary. The lowest combination is a high card, which means that the highest card you have is higher than your opponent’s. A pair is when you have two cards of the same rank, for instance if you have two aces then you have a pair of aces. Two pair is when you form two combinations of a pair but of different ranks, like a pair of eights and a pair of jacks. Three of a kind is when you form a combination of three cards of the same rank, like three queens. Straight is when you have all five cards of different suits but in a consecutive sequence, but keep in mind that an ace can be used as 1, in a sequence of A, 2, 3, 4, 5, or as the highest card when you have 10, J, Q, K and A, the latter being the highest straight available. The flush is when you have all five cards of the same suit, like five diamonds or five hearts. Full house is when you have three of a kind and the last two cards form a pair. Four of a kind is when you have four cards of the same rank. Straight flush is when you have a straight and all the cards are of the same suit. The highest possible hand in Texas Hold’Em is a royal flush, that means you have the highest straight available, 10, J, Q, K, A, all of the same suit.

In Texas Hold’Em a hand begins with two cards being dealt to every player, which are known as pocket cards and are only seen by the player who receives them. Other players may be able to use their intuition to get an idea about the pocket cards of other player by observing their betting patterns and behavior throughout the game. Every player has unconscious gestures that give them up to other players if they have high cards or low cards, even professionals that have been playing this game for a long time.

After the players receive their pocket cards the dealer turns others cards face up on the table. First, three cards are dealt by the dealer that are called the flop, then a fourth card called turn and a fifth and last card called the river. After each round of dealing cards there is a round of betting. Players that believe they have the best hand can go until the final round and try to win the pot and the others can quit in each round of betting. There can be also players who don’t have anything, but try to force others to quit by intimidating them with placing a bet consistent of a large amount of money. This makes other players think that he has a very good hand, maybe better than theirs and stop betting. This is called a “bluff” and it is not uncommon in poker games. Situations may occur when a successful bluffer may end up winning more money than the ones who play for high cards.

You shouldn’t think that you are ready to face world champions if you know the combinations of cards in poker. There is more to poker than that. Free online poker is the best way for a novice to start playing poker and observe the patterns that other players use, because it doesn’t involve real money. Free online poker is also a way to sharpen those skills that you develop. You shouldn’t expect to win something of major substance from playing free online poker, but it is a way to become a very skilled poker player and move on to real money games.

There are also disadvantages to playing free poker online. The way you can spot a bluffer from playing free poker online is by observing the way other players bet or the time it takes for them to act when it is their turn, but there are other signs that give out a player. These signs are called “tells” and can be observed only when you play poker face to face, and not when playing free poker online. There are a lot of sites where you can play free online poker. If you want to become a free poker player be sure to visit hansapoker.com.
